Samuel Chamberlain Papers 1895-1975 bulk 1909-1984.

This collection is comprised of 18 boxes of personal and business correspondence from 1915 to 1975. The bulk of it is business correspondence from the 1940s through 1970s regarding his publications. There is a large amount of research material on France and England. The Phillips Library also owns 66 of his published books and 57 engagement calendars. PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE contains weekly letters from Chamberlain to his parents while he was at the University of Washington (1913-1914), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1915-1917), during World War I (1917-1919), and immediately after the war. It also contains a scrapbook made by friends after a visit to California in 1971. There are 2 boxes of condolence letters to Chamberlains wife, Narcissa, after his death. BUSINESS PAPERS is divided into two subseries: PUBLISHER CORRESPONDENCE and PERSONAL BUSINESS. PUBLISHER CORRESPONDENCE (1937-1971) contains correspondence, contracts, press clippings, and photographs from his publisher, Walter Frese at Hastings House. The material includes correspondence to and from family members Narcissa, Narcisse, and Stephanie. PERSONAL BUSINESS contains Chamberlains home office files. They consist of personal correspondence, correspondence about his work, photographs, newspaper and magazine article clippings, and awards. PUBLICATIONS contains files on several of his published books and articles. For Bouquet de France and British Bouquet, there is a folder on each region of the country. Each folder contains research notes, menus, drafts, photographs, correspondence, and often the Gourmet magazine issue in which the article appeared. There are numerous photographs for the calendars that he published in the 1960s and 1970s. There are copies of Gourmet Magazine from the 1960s.

The daughter of Samuel and Narcissa G. Chamberlain, Narcisse Chamberlain was an editor at William Morrow and Company, specializing in cookbooks. She worked with her parents on many volumes, including The Flavor of France in Recipes and Pictures (1962) and French Menus for Parties (1968).
